After Midnight

The first

time I opened

my mouth without crying

I let out a roar like natural

gemstones:

Deep and

unpolished. That

no tear knew bravery

and in God’s Book of Life my name

was bold.

So I

told mommy to

stop hating the best parts

of me and cover them with praise

instead.

I told

Big Sis that her

relationship with beer

is stronger than ours but only one

is free.

Hands pressed

against ribcage

breath woven with new life.

No more wishing on eyelashes,

big girl.
